About the programme

The Teaching Apprenticeships Programme (TAP) makes it easy for schools use their apprenticeship levy to attract, recruit and train the best graduates as home-grown teachers.

It provides a fee-free, salaried route for graduates to enter the Teaching profession and gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) within 1 year.

Graduates of the Teaching Apprenticeships Programme benefit from one-to-one support to find a school looking to employ a Teaching Apprentice.

Training

The 1-year teaching apprenticeships programme sees schools employ Teaching Apprentices and utilise apprenticeship funding for initial teacher training (ITT). After 9 months the graduate will achieve QTS and then complete their End-Point Assessment to pass the apprenticeship.
The Teaching Apprenticeships programme provides a comprehensive 360-degree solution taking care of both the recruitment and training arrangements for schools.

Recruitment

Responding to year on year reductions in the number of UCAS applicants to Initial Teacher Training AND increased numbers of qualified teachers leaving the profession, the Teaching Apprenticeships route empowers schools to proactively attract, recruit and train graduates as trainee teachers. We believe this is the way forward for our partner schools to retain higher numbers of teachers for future generations.
The Teaching Apprenticeships programme includes a professional graduate recruitment service for schools. On joining the programme schools are required to specify their graduate vacancies to get started.

Programme funding

The training is funded via one of two areas:

Employers that pay into the apprenticeship levy will be able to use up to £9,000 of funding from their apprenticeship service account to cover the cost of training and assessing the apprentice.
Employers that do not pay the levy or who have insufficient funds in their digital account can access funding to support the training and assessment of an apprentice. The government will pay 90% of the costs of training and assessment for the apprenticeship (up to the £9,000 apprenticeship funding band maximum).

The salary cost may be funded as follows:

The Government will provide grant funding to lead schools in School Direct partnerships employing postgraduate apprenticeship trainees. This grant funding is in addition to funding available from the Education and Skills Funding Agency and will be payable at the following rates:

Please note that Teaching Apprenticeships must be paid in accordance with at least point one on the unqualified teachers’ pay scale for the period of their training.

Salary & fees

Teaching Apprentices are paid in line with at least point one on the unqualified teachers’ pay scale.

Training

You will be employed by the school for a minimum of 12 months during your Initial Teacher Training (ITT). After 9 months you will achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and then complete a final assessment, known as an End-Point Assessment, to pass the apprenticeship. Your training will be delivered by a DfE approved ITT provider.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have:

The equivalent to a grade 4 in GCSE English and mathematics. If you intend to teach primary aged pupils, you will also need a grade 4 GCSE in a science subject.
A degree awarded by a UK higher education provider, or a recognised equivalent qualification.
Successfully completed the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy

I'm Head of Faculty here at Essa Academy for Humanities, mentoring two TAP students at the moment. So I think the benefits of the Teaching Apprenticeship Programme is that they're launched straight in and of course, we've made sure their timetable is slowly laddered up, so the initial part of teaching might be a 10 minute plenary or introduction the lesson and then obviously the timetable allocation is increasing each week. But the idea of getting stuck in straight away and picking up good practice straight away from colleagues and that being specific to the school that you're in, I think has been really really useful. So the idea that you can get started really quickly and hit the ground running I think has really benefited the trainee we've got, and it suits their personality to get stuck in nice and quickly.

The quality and delivery of learning through the TAP programme is excellent. It's very thorough on e-track, which is the e-Qualitas online learning portal which is where the trainees and mentors record all of the evidence and the observations and the learning that's happened. There's a very thorough programme on there, quite a complete curriculum which links really nicely to teacher standards and is quite comparable and equivalent to other training providers with what they expect. So the support has been good. There's been Webinars available for Mentors and it's a complete training package, so there's been no complaints at all, and it's quite an easy route to follow, I think, for the school, for the Mentor and for the Trainee as well.
