Don’t let maths subject knowledge hold you back from becoming a maths teacher

Gaps in maths subject knowledge, or lack of degree in that subject, should not stop you applying for teacher training. Our maths SKE course supports applicants that may not have a degree or the confidence in maths to become a maths teacher.

About SKE

If you have applied for a Teaching Apprenticeship to become a maths teacher or any other Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programme, your offer of a place may be conditional on you completing a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course first.

The length of the maths SKE courses are 8, 12 or 16-weeks depending on your needs. They are delivered online with a new course starting each week, meaning there are no barriers for you to get started immediately.

There are several reasons why you may be asked to complete a SKE course, including:

  1. your degree wasn’t in maths
  2. you studied your chosen subject at A level, but not to degree level at university
  3. you have relevant professional experience, but you need guidance on how to teach your knowledge in line with the curriculum
