Don’t let English subject knowledge hold you back from becoming a English teacher
Gaps in English subject knowledge, or lack of degree in that subject, should not stop you applying for teacher training. Our English SKE course supports applicants that may not have a degree or the confidence in English to become an English teacher.
If you have applied for a Teaching Apprenticeship to become an English teacher or any other Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programme, your offer of a place may be conditional on you completing a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course first.
The length of the English SKE courses are 8, 12 or 16-weeks depending on your needs. They are delivered online with a new course starting each week, meaning there are no barriers for you to get started immediately.
There are several reasons why you may be asked to complete a SKE course, including:
- your degree wasn’t in English
- you studied your chosen subject at A level, but not to degree level at university
- you have relevant professional experience, but you need guidance on how to teach your knowledge in line with the curriculum
Eligibility & funding
You can complete our English SKE course if you have received a conditional offer from the Teaching Apprenticeship Programme or any other ITT provider.
All English SKE courses, regardless of length, are fully funded by the Department for Education. You will not pay any tuition fees and you may receive a training bursary of £200 per week throughout the course.
Your £200 per week bursary is paid to you on the condition that a module consisting of 25 hours study is completed each week.
