Science Trainee Teacher

Two high-achieving and collaborative single-sex schools in the Elstree, Hertfordshire area are looking for a Science Trainee Teacher to join their successful team and secure Qualified Teacher Status with their support.

This position is a long-term commitment with the plan to appoint two successful applicants for a minimum three year teacher training route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) under the Teaching Apprenticeship Programme. The schools in question – The Haberdashers’ Aske Schools – hope to secure two graduates eager to get involved with school life inside and outside of the classroom as a Science Trainee Teacher.

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School & The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Girls’ School are seeking to consider hardworking graduates with a history of academic excellence – a strong, UK undergraduate degree at 2.1 or above is required for application to this role. You will also need a grade B or above in GCSE Mathematics and English for application. Haberdasher’s will also be financially supporting the right candidate in completing a PGCE qualification, through e-Qualitas’ and TAP’s partnership with the University of Buckingham.

In order to apply for this role of Science Trainee Teacher, you will need to meet a few minimum requirements, without exception, including:

-Bachelor of Honours in Science or similar area (1st class or 2.1 is expected for this position)

-GCSE B or above in English and Maths; preferably an A-Level in Science also (Academic excellence is a must for this particular placement)

-A passion for Science and confident abilities in presenting/teaching/tuition

-Right-to-work in the UK full-time for at least the next three consecutive years; you must have been (ordinarily) resident in the UK over the last three years

-Experience working with students in some capacity is not required but is preferred; the most important part being a keen interest in teaching and a strong skillset!

Working and training at Habs as a Science Trainee Teacher, you will be expected to get involved in many aspects of school life – the school encourages newly appointed trainees to support students not only with their learning, but also in extra-curricular activities. This programme has been designed to ensure a smooth transition from new community member (you will work as a House Tutor in addition to your training in year 1) as an ambitious trainee, finally to Early Career Teacher (NQT/ECT in year 2 and 3).

Training here, the school hopes to ensure you have a fully-rounded teaching experience collaborating with other educators and getting to know your students on a personal level. You will have the opportunity to support and (possibly) lead in co-curricular Music clubs, Sports Clubs and in Drama too; Habs has a long history of producing plays of exceptionally high standards and senior students regularly have the opportunity to perform on the Edinburgh Fringe. The school also has a range of varied and state-of-the-art facilities including a cutting-edge sports centre, swimming pool, dedicated ICT suites and art studio.

With this in mind, the opportunity to live in beautiful, modern and subsidised accommodation near the school will be available. Sharing a two bedroom flat with another candidate/colleague, you will have your own bedroom and bathroom, a spacious balcony or terrace, and the best part – this accommodation is ideally situated for a short commute to your school. The area of Borehamwood offers a diverse mix of amenities, all wrapped up in the stunning countryside with local direct links into London under 20 minutes.

The school is one that seeks to nurture students to their full potential, and during your programme as you begin teaching your own lessons, the expectation will be the same for you.
